CDS team receive platinum fundraising award from Mouth Cancer Foundation
The Community Dental Services CIC (CDS) team of six employees in Bedfordshire who recently made a big impact in the Bedford River Festival’s raft race and fundraised for the Mouth Cancer Foundation, have been recognised by the charity as one of their highest fundraisers.
The team made up of Senior Dental Officers, Dental Nurses, a Specialist in Special Care and CDS’s Clinical Director built a raft in their free time and took part in the festival’s raft race, finishing third in their heat and sixth in the final.
The team’s goal was not only to have fun and showcase their raft building skills, but also to raise awareness and funds for the Mouth Cancer Foundation; a charity dedicated to helping and supporting those living with or at risk of mouth cancer, throat cancer and other head and neck cancers. The Mouth Cancer Foundation also provides valuable assistance and information to families, friends and carers of those affected by the disease.
Raising over £1300, the team’s efforts were recognised by being awarded the charity’s platinum award for fundraising.
Glen Taylor, Chief Operating Officer for CDS in the East of England, and one of the raft crew was proud of the team’s support for the charity: “Last year a staggering 10,825 individuals in the UK were diagnosed with Mouth Cancer; around 30 people per day. This statistic highlights the urgency to raise awareness and bring about positive change. CDS patients routinely receive cancer screenings as part of their appointments and CDS’s Oral Health Improvement teams work within communities to promote good oral health and provide advice on how to self-check. The Mouth Cancer Foundation has always been close to our hearts and for many years now, we have been actively involved in supporting their cause through fundraising and spreading awareness. By joining hands with the Mouth Cancer Foundation, we aim to save more lives and make a positive impact on those affected by this disease.”
The Mouth Cancer Foundation is dedicated to raising awareness, educating and promoting the early detection of mouth cancer as well as supporting those affected by it; and partners with the Oral Health Foundation to hold Mouth Cancer Action Month every November.
The Bedford River Festival is a biannual, two-day community event that attracts an estimated 250,000 visitors. This year’s festival featured live entertainment, music, workshops, farming area, crazy golf, activities, a funfair and river displays.
